Thompson Raisins
One of the sweetest raisins we can buy is the Monucca raisin. While the Thompson Select Raisin is the most commonly sold raisin, the Thompson Raisin is not as big and black as the Monucca Raisin and the Thompson Raisin lacks the natural sugar goodness we find in the Monucca Raisin. When the Thompson Raisin is "bleached" or "blanced", it is called a "Golden Raisin". The normal count for a Thompson Raisin is about 2000 raisins per pound, but we buy a smaller raisin, the Zante currant, which has about 4,000 count per pound. This is also a sweet, black raisin which is very popular with bakers. We carry the Zante Currant all year around, but most people use it in the holidays for baking cakes and fruitcakes.
