Brazils

The Brazil nut is found in a very small area of the world. It is only grown in the corner of Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. The tree is found in the Amazon rain forest and they are one of the tallest trees in the forest. They tower over most other species. The tree is wild and spaced at least 1,800 feet apart. They require a lot of room to grow and mature. I have walked in the Brazil nut forests and it is fascinating. The tree seed are spread by small rodents that carry them off every May to secret burrows. There they mature and a few may sprout. Over many years that makes a new tree. The attempts by man to cultivate the crop and put it in orchards so far is not successful. Perhaps over time it will be cultivated, but for now it is rapidly becoming a rare nut as the rain forest disappears by over logging. .
